Pick up any newspaper and almost daily we can read about another organization in business, health care, non-profit, religious, service or government with their future in jeopardy. It is easy to blame the economy, government, off shore competition or any number of factors and yet there are similar organizations that are surviving and prospering.

Organizations face common problems such as how to increase revenues, increase market share and improve profitability. As I look back on over 30 years of working in organizations, it is pretty clear that, the success of any organization depends on two things: how well it satisfies a need and how well it can adapt to change.

Organizations measure their success by looking at their financials. My experience indicates, however, that revenue is a lagging indicator. Other measures need to be developed that will give early warning signals both about how well an organization is meeting a need and how well it is addressing change.
