CHANGE MANAGEMENT CONSULTING
APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY
The business world is in a state of constant change and turmoil. Survival requires more than just labor productivity; it requires the motivation, dedication and empowerment of every employee in this highly competitive environment. This will become even more important as we move from a period of labor surplus into a period of labor shortage that will be compounded by insufficient knowledge and skills.

Traditional Change Management is based on problem solving. This is a negative approach that is consistent with command and control thinking in old management books that sees people as interchangeable parts.

Businesses that want the agility to survive in today’s turbulent economy must use innovative skills to attract the best talent, inspire an ownership perspective, reduce burnout, reduce turnover and to optimize the return on their labor dollar expenditures. Successful organizations will have an employee centered culture, they will be the employers of choice. Appreciative Inquiry is a strength based approach to strategic change management that focuses and builds on what is working to achieve positive results.

This positive and inclusive process is widely known in academic circles, but not widely known yet in management circles. There is little documented information because Appreciative Inquiry is a collaborative change management process rather than a strictly by the books approach. It is an ongoing work in progress, constantly being created by the people who use it.

The process works and is currently being used by Roadway, Green Mountain Coffee, The U.S. Navy and others. You are encouraged to learn more about Appreciative Inquiry at websites like http://ai.cwru.edu and http://aiconsulting.org.

It is a fascinating process that we have used for strategic planning, decision-making, customer service, new product introductions and much more. Employee motivation and empowerment are vital to achieving business objectives in today's environment. Cannon Advantage uses Appreciative Inquiry as a Change Management tool to increase productivity.

A. I. Tip for Better Meetings:
Ever been in a meeting where everyone had come with their own agenda and the meeting deteriorated to a battle instead of an arena of exploration and cooperation?

Next time, start the meeting by asking the participants in the meeting to relate something good that has happened to them since the last meeting. This forces everyone to think of something positive and different than his or her original thoughts for the meeting. It also puts everyone in a more appreciative mindset before getting into the specifics of the meeting. Try it and see for yourself if your meetings aren’t more productive.
