Conflict and Stress

Conflict and Stress in marketing for manufacturers in Erie, PAProspering through all the conflict and stress requires balance. Balance in the physical world is the ability to stay upright. Balance in the fiscal world is what is left in your checking account after you pay all the bills. Balance in business is managing the ever present conflicts that confront you. Regardless of the source, being out of balance causes stress.

In over 40 plus years in business, I have learned that surviving and prospering through all the conflict and stress requires balance. Understanding the conflicts that cause stress in your life makes it much easier to handle those stresses and provides the insights necessary to regaining your balance and reducing stress.

Conflicting goals are always a huge source of stress for people in positions of leadership. At one point in my career, there were serious conflicts between the demands for long term thinking and planning while being faced with short term performance measurements. This conflict created huge amounts of stress until I fully understood the causes of the stress and was able to rationalize my actions in regard to these two conflicting goals. The use of the matrix shown above helped me in my rationalization. Consistent short term performance while living within the long term plan was not likely to happen consistently. When I plotted my options, it became apparent that both a strong plan and a weak plan with low performance would not serve me well. On the other hand, it was also apparent that high performance would offset a poor plan. Consequently, my stress was significantly reduced when my options became more clear as a result of the matrix analysis.
