Convergence and the Next Generation of Business

The Jeremy Rifkin video shown above is interesting as it provides an insight into convergence and the next generation of business. I don’t agree with his premise in the video nor do I agree with all of his specific points, but I do find it to be a great thought provoking video.

I did think his points about energy, logistics and communication affecting the Industrial Revolution are a great starting point. The changes in technology that have moved us from print to broadcast and now to the internet as our source of information and communication are now well established even though we are still witnessing the death of old vehicles such as newspapers and magazines. The internet, unless screwed up by government, will be an engine that drives business and will drive the next generation of business.

There is also great validity in his comment about the influence of logistics. When I was first starting my career, LTL (less than truckload) was a very common expression. Now it is unheard of as UPS and fedex have changed the logistics landscape. Rifkin points to driverless vehicles and drones as potential delivery systems which may well evolve, but I am more excited by the maker movement and 3D printing. I believe this technology will eliminate or greatly reduce the movement of finished goods while fostering local production and affordable customization.

Finally, Rifkin points to “renewable energy” as a convergent factor affecting our future. I, on the other hand am not so certain about renewables. Even if the costs come down to where it makes economic sense, there are still problems with creating and storing power when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing. There is no doubt in my mind that our approach to energy is going to change significantly, but I am more inclined to think that we will move towards more local production of energy based upon the resources at hand including clean coal where it is abundant. Gas and oil that is local and abundant as a result of hydraulic fracturing where appropriate.

I encourage you to watch this video and think about the implications of convergence and the next generation of business for your business and in your local area.
