| Volume 5, Issue 6 - June, 2006
Since the first of the year, I have been working on a chapter for a book entitled “Masterpieces in Healthcare Leadership”
which will be published in December by Jones & Bartlett. It has been an incredible experience and much more consuming than I had ever anticipated.
Several weeks ago all the participants got together in Boston. It included the folks with the original idea, representatives from the participating
institutions and the various chapter authors. It was an interesting day as we utilized the World Café process to learn about the themes that
were common to these very successful organizations.
In manufacturing, we have come to understand that quality and service must be a given if our organizations are to survive. In healthcare the same
is true of the clinical side of the business. What truly sets the great organizations in manufacturing and in healthcare apart from the also rans
is the people. The truly great organizations have learned how to tap into their people and get them to take ownership of their work. This is normally
referred to as the softer side of management but this book will show a measurable Causal Flow Model that also has implications for all organizations.
There is substance in the “softer stuff.”
The piece that is so intriguing to me is something called “Climate.” Every organization has a culture, much like fish live in water.
Climate isn’t culture but more like the temperature of the water. This work has made it so clear to me that a healthy climate is a function
of realistic, Clear Directions, Accountability, Recognition & Rewards, Tools to do the work, Teamwork and Pride in the Organization. Developing
the right climate is a tall order, but it does affect the outcomes and in turn the financial results.
Another interesting part of our meeting was a session with Peter Senge, Ph.D., pioneer in the Field of Learning Organizations, Author of “The
Fifth Discipline” and Co-Author of “Presence”. (http://www.cannonadvantage.com/news1104.htm)
His insights were thought provoking. Peter believes that our system of public education is fatally flawed and the time has come for an entirely new
approach to education. He went on to suggest that we have problems in most of our existing institutions including “Healthcare.” He suggested
that we do not have a healthcare system but rather a healthrepair system. The focus has been on repairing people with heath problems rather than
preventing health problems in the first place. This repair approach is why the cost of healthcare is rising. We need a new model that provides true
healthcare and reduces the cost of health repair.
Peter went on to say what we all know: that our institutions need new models if we are to survive and prosper in the future. He blames problems
in business on our institutions of higher learning, especially our M.B.A. programs where the focus has been on increasing shareholder value instead
of serving the needs of the end user. He further suggests that we are producing products that are in fact bad for consumers and points to junk food
as an example. While Peter is hard on business, he is not anti-business and believes that business offers the best hope for not only solving today’s
problems, but providing a better future.
Peter has been doing work with BP and suggests that they are caught in a dilemma that faces many businesses. While BP is a major factor in the
oil business, they are also the largest investor in solar power. BP fully understands the need to move away from the oil business into renewable
energy, but they need the revenues from the oil business to fund the development of solar energy. This year, they are planning on investing $10 billion
in solar energy.
We have all been aware of the rapid pace of change for some time now. How well is your business model working now and how will it work in the future
to meet the needs of your customers, your employees and your owners?
Next month we will take a look at “Blue Ocean Strategy,” a new book that just might provide some insights for you to consider as you
address this question. In the meantime, if you would like to discuss your business model, please give me a call toll free at (866) 598-8450.
The National Hardware Show continues to grow with more of the traditional hardware suppliers returning to the show. Talking to exhibitors, traffic
and activity was good especially early in the show. Next year the show moves to Orlando for a one year visit before returning to Las Vegas in 2008.
It is doubtful that the move to Orlando will help attendance. Exhibitors will still be several years away from establishing a consistent booth location
making it easy for people to find them. I love seeing all of the new enterprises trying to make their mark in this industry and hope that they keep
coming in ever increasing numbers. I also hope that someday when the musical chairs stops with locations that just maybe we could bring back some
of the big name power tool manufacturers and even consider alternating years with Cologne. I can dream, can’t I?
