• Government Needs To Go LEAN

The month of March vacillates between coming in like a lion or a lamb. March of 2010 will be remembered for Obamacare coming in like a lion despite the objections of the majority of the American people. This program added to TARP, The Stimulus, The Jobs Bill and others have taken us to previously unimagined levels of debt. The growing encroachment of government into our lives, the increasing level of debt and the elected officials ignoring the pleas of their constituents is wakening We the People to the tremendous problem facing our country.

Sometimes graphics can illustrate a point better than words.

When neither the people nor the government have power, there is anarchy. When the government is all powerful there is tyranny. When the people are all powerful there is freedom and when the government and the people are both powerful, there is revolution.

Our founding fathers understood that natural law exists and that people yearn to be free. Even in today’s world, people want the freedom of the Internet. They want the freedom of 400 channels on their TV. They want the freedom of Cell phones. They want the freedom to move up Maslow’s Hierarchy of of Needs to achieve Self-Actualization.

Since our founding, government has been slowly expanding and acquiring more power This has happened in part because We the People were too busy to watch government while they were striving to work for a better life for themselves and their families.

Today we are rapidly approaching the breaking point. Government is rapidly moving to achieve total control. The People are awakening to the idea that the freedom they want and need to achieve Self-Actualization is in jeopardy.

The time is rapidly approaching when We the People need to elect business people to government office and have them apply LEAN principle to government. LEAN is the practice that considers the expenditure of resources for any goal other than the creation of value for the end customer to be wasteful, and thus a target for elimination. The idea is to increase efficiency, decrease waste, and use empirical methods to decide what matters, rather than uncritically accepting pre-existing ideas.

Measuring creates a focus that provides better results. Government sorely needs some measuring. Legislation is being generated at breakneck speed, but we never look back to determine whether the legislation accomplished it’s objective or not. It is time for a change.

In my book, “Taking Aim for Better Decision-Making" I refer to the 20 years of research at Ohio State showing that half of all decisions fail. Sometimes I wonder if our lawmakers do even that well?

We the People need to apply business practices to government and start measuring our elected officials. We the People can no longer afford to allow them to continue to create bureaucracies, minimize our rights and increase our taxes.

• Do Something or Quit Complaining

The U.S. has the highest corporate tax rate in the world. Ohio has the 7th highest state and local tax rate in the country. Government spending is bankrupting our country and reducing the value of our money. Uncertainty about Health Care, Cap and Trade, Card Check, increased taxes etc. is making it impossible for business to chart a future course.
