Understand the Present by Knowing History

Coal Oil JohnnyTo understand the present, it is critical to understand history. Over the course of my life, I have come to appreciate the importance of knowing the history of people, communities and organizations in order to understand their present situation. Even as a child, I had a great appreciation for history, in part because I was privileged to visit so many historical sites and learn so much about the founding of our country.

As I entered the workforce, it became apparent to me that business organizations could also be better understood if there was an appreciation of history and how the company got to where it is. I even wrote a paper about how important it is to know the history of a company and the industry it serves in order to develop the best strategy for the company going forward.

At one point, I even spent a great deal of time and effort exploring genealogy in an effort to better understand my family and myself. As a result of that effort, I became fascinated by to characters in my family’s history. The first character was my first cousin, four generations removed. His name was John Washington Steele, but to the world, he was known as “Coal Oil Johnny“.

The second character was Bishop Robert Richford Roberts, an early Bishop in the Methodist Church in America.

Steele was the original oil and gas prodigal and there is much to be learned from his life. Roberts lead an incredible life that today sounds improbable if not almost impossible. There is much to be learned from the Bishop about perseverance, self control and humility. These two men have such incredible stories that I have begun telling their stories in the first person. I wear a costume that depicts the appropriate era, tell their stories and the lessons we can all learn from them.

I am absolutely convinced that knowing history helps us to understand the present and I would love to present these men to you and your organization.
